The qutub shahi tombs – A Heritage Park

Hyderabad, the city of Nawabs has a great history and there are many things to see that give an idea about the lives of the kings that ruled the beautiful city of Hyderabad. The qutub shahi tombs is one such place that gives us a glimpse of the royalty of the kings of Hyderabad. Well, we know that tombs are the place where the dead are buried, and looking at the beauty of these tombs I wonder how royal their lives were if they could build something like this for the dead.

The tombs at heritage park are an excellent piece of architecture. There are a total of 7 tombs and a mosque inside the Heritage Park. The tombs belong to Qutb Shahi rulers. What makes it more interesting is that it hosts the tomb of Muhammad Quli Shah who laid the foundation of Hyderabad. The tombs are quite old but, from time-to-time renovation had kept them in good shape. The renovation work was done first by Salar Jung III and presently the conservation and landscape restoration are being done jointly by Aga Khan Trust for Culture, TATA Trusts, and the Govt. of Telangana.

Tomb of Abdulla Qutb Shah  –  Qutub Shahi Tombs

I’ve been in Hyderabad for the past two years but didn’t visit this place. Finally, I visited Qutb Shahi tombs last month which is situated near the Golconda fort. The weather was great, the rain had just stopped and the temperature was just perfect to go out.

I bought grilled corn at the entrance and started off exploring the place. Being a holiday, it was full of people and as I moved around the tombs I realized it is not only a heritage park, it is a popular picnic spot, people can be seen lazing around in the well-maintained parks.

Right at the entrance we see the mosque and meters ahead we see the first tomb. I was stunned to see the size of the tomb, it is a 2 story structure belonging to Abdulla Qutb Shah, the 7th king of the Qutb Shah Dynasty. After walking for a few meters we see the tombs of his mother and his wife.

Finally, we see the most beautiful of all tombs, the tomb of Muhammad Quli Shah, the fifth king of the Qutub Shah dynasty and the founder of Hyderabad. All the tombs look huge but the irony is that the interior contains nothing more than a grave. However, the architectural beauty is equal both inside and outside of the tombs.

I was mesmerized to see the architectural work on the walls and the doors of the tombs. The pointed arches added more to its beauty. One good thing to see was that the place is well maintained and according to the information boards, the renovations are being done from time to time to keep the tombs in good condition.

In addition to the tombs, the heritage park is having beautiful parks, there’s greenery, fresh air, and peace, in short, a perfect place to enjoy with your family/ partner. It is also the venue of the Deccan festival so if you want a glimpse of the local culture, you may plan a visit at that time. The heritage park is also known as 7 tombs.
